Blu-ray Releases For August
August 7, 2014
As the dog days of summer roll on, the DVD releases keep on a coming. Here’s a look at what you can find on the high definition format known as Blu-ray in the month of August.
Per my usual custom, we’ll get things started with the recent theatrical films being issued during the month. These include, Need For Speed (Not Reviewed); Oculus (**); Ping Pong Summer (Not Reviewed); God’s Not Dead (Not Reviewed); Divergent (**); A Haunted House 2 (**); Locke (Not Reviewed); Muppets Most Wanted (Not Reviewed); Amazing Spiderman 2 (** ½); the made for TV version of Rosemary’s Baby (Not Reviewed); The Quiet Ones (Not Reviewed); Blended (* ½); Legends of Oz (Not Reviewed) and the made for HBO AIDS drama, The Normal Heart (*** ½).
Criterion, known for their elaborate special editions, will be issuing one of my all time favorite films, All That Jazz (****).

The disc will be sporting a sparkling new transfer and copious amounts of extras. The company will also see fit to issue Love Streams (Not Screened); Y Tu Mama Tambien (Not Screened); Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down (Not Screened) and Vengeance is Mine (Not Reviewed) during the month.
Twilight Time is known for issuing films in limited editions that no one else seems to want to be bothered with putting out there. This month’s offerings include the Elvis Presley flick, Follow That Dream (***); a director Ken Loach double feature of Raining Stones/Rif Raff (*** both films); The Buddy Holly Story (***); The Secret of Santa Vittoria (Not Screened) and the 1946 film Centennial Summer (Not Screened).
Speaking of deluxe special editions and such, Scream/Shout Factory have been doing an excellent job of making sure that the great cult classics that film fans fondly remember get the justice they deserve. This month’s offerings from the company include Brian DePalma’s Phantom of the Paradise (*** ½); the 1980 horror flick Motel Hell (** ½) and an early 1980s horror staple of HBO that features a truly unique cast, Without Warning (** ½).
Disney will be busy combing its vaults with such offerings as the 1997 film Hercules (**); the 1999 version of Tarzan (** ½); Bedknobs and Broomsticks (** ½) and The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (Not Screened).
Toxie, The Toxic Avenger (great ‘B’ movie)
Troma, a legendary film distributor with a penchant for exploitation films, is getting in to the Blu-ray business and will be issuing The Toxic Avenger (***) and Bloodsucking Freaks (* ½) during the month.
Warners, in time for the 37th anniversary of the death of Elvis Presley, will be issuing the concert film, Elvis:That’s the Way It Is (***) and Viva Las Vegas (**). The company will also issue—under the New Line label—Rush Hour 2 (**); the 1998 version of The Avengers (* ½); The Man Who Knew Too Little (* ½) and the third volume of their Looney Tunes Platinum Collection (various ratings).
Universal will issue The Flintstones (* ½) and Fox will issue The Full Monty (Not Reviewed); while Kino will issue such MGM titles as the Blake Edwards classic The Party (*** ½); Mr. Majestyk (***); Breakheart Pass (***); We Won’t Grow Old Together (Not Screeened); the 1960 version of The Unforgiven (***); On the Beach (***) and What’s New Pussycat (** ½).
That covers things for August. Next month looks to be pretty exciting with such titles as 75th anniversary edition of Gone With the Wind and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Hope you find something that piques your cinematic interests.
