Blu-ray Releases For December

December 11, 2014

With the holidays fast approaching, the studios are ramping up their output for high definition Blu-ray. December is a month chock full of interesting titles and there’s certainly something for everyone.

Let’s first take a look at the spate of recent films seeing release this month. They include the horror film As Above So Below (* ½); Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (***); A Dolphin Tale 2 (not reviewed); Dead Snow 2 (not reviewed); Calvary (not reviewed); Magic in the Moonlight (** ½); This is Where I Leave You (not reviewed); The Skeleton Twins (not reviewed); Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3-D (not reviewed); The Congress (not reviewed); The Equalizer (**); The Good Lie (not reviewed) and Guardians of the Galaxy (** ½).

Criterion, the company known for their outstanding special-edition treatment of critically acclaimed films, continues its trend of releasing outstanding product with their December slate. This month’s offerings, complete with the usual outstanding treasure trove of documentaries and bonus features, includes The Night Porter (not screened); Safe (***); Time Bandits (***) and the Oscar nominated comedy Tootsie (****).

Marlon Brando (in tub) with Nicholson in The Missouri Breaks

One of the big misfires of the 1970s The Missouri Breaks (not reviewed) will finally make its way to Blu-ray in December via Kino. The film features the only onscreen pairing of acting legends Marlon Brando and Jack Nicholson and is notable for this reason than if for no other. Other notable releases from Kino during the month include the Robert Altman film, Buffalo Bill and the Indians (not screened); Running Scared (** ½); The Emerald Forest (***) and the Bill Cosby detective thriller, Hickey and Boggs (***).

Warner Brothers/MGM/Sony have partnered together to issue a Stanley Kubrick Masterpiece collection, which includes virtually of the acclaimed director’s films in one box. Individual reviews don’t really apply here, as you know if you’re a Kubrick fan or not. If you’re reading this, most likely. This set can’t be purchased in stores and is available only via

Speaking of Warners, the Joe Dante directed Looney Tunes: Back in Action (**) will also be issued by the company during the month as will a Batman (1989) (***) 25th anniversary edition.

Other notable offerings during the month include The Package (not screened); The Offense (not screened); The Hundred Foot Journey (not screened); The Quartermass Experiment (***); Witness to Murder (not screened) and a double feature of the 1970s horror anthology films, Tales From the Crypt and The Vault of Horror (both ***).
