Blu-ray Releases In April

Now that April has arrived, the season of spring has definitely sprung and so have the new Blu-ray titles popping up this month. As you will see with this month’s list of stellar titles, there’s something for both the die-hard film fanatic and the casual watcher. Here’s a look at what you can expect.
As per my usual custom, the recent theatrical releases will be listed first. In April some the recent titles include A Most Violent Year (***); Big Eyes (***); The Babadook (**); Maps to the Stars (Not Screened); Woman in Black 2 (Not Screened); Taken 3 (* ½); Cake (Not Screened); Accidental Love (Not Screened); Paddington (Not Screened); Inherent Vice (**); The Gambler (Not Screened) and The Wedding Ringer (Not Screened).
Warners will be issuing a number of varied titles from its back catalogue. These include Singles (*** ½); Detroit Rock City (** ½); Hooper (***) and Sharky’s Machine (** ½).

Shout/Scream Factory will continue its policy of releasing cult films on Blu-ray attendant with the usual treasure trove of special features that come with their product. Their offerings this month include a double bill of Eddie and the Cruisers Parts one (** ½) and two (* ½); the 1983 version of Breathless (***); Class of 1984 (***); Thunder Road (*** ½); Escape From New York (***); Ghoulies (* ½) and its sequel, Ghoulies 2 (not screened); the horror anthology, From a Whisper to a Scream (***); the 1986 version of Invaders From Mars (** ½); a double feature of Breakin (** ½) and its sequel, Breakin 2: Electric Bugaloo (not screened); Miami Blues (not Screened); a double feature of the 2000 TV movie remake of Carrie (* ½) and the 1999 theatrical sequel, The Rage: Carrie 2 (* ½).
Criterion also specializes in deluxe special editions and their offerings include Le Silence De La Mer (not screened); Odd Man Out (not screened) and Sullivan’s Travels (*** ½).
Universal will be digging in to their vaults and issuing Silent Running (***); Journey to the Far Side of the Sun (not screened) and a double bill featuring both versions of the weeper Imitation of Life (*** both films). Disney, on the other hand, will be issuing a 30th anniversary edition of Return to Oz (** ½) and the classic The Swiss Family Robinson (***).

Troma, which specializes in horror films, will be issuing a couple of titles from their vault. These include Toxic Avenger, Part 2 (* ½) and Class of Nuke Em High 2 (No stars).
Twilight Time is a company that specializes in limited pressings of their titles with only 3000 copies being pressed. Their offerings in April include The Fantasticks (not screened); April Love (not screened); Remains of the Day (***); The Story of Adele H (***) and Zardoz (not screened).
Other offerings during the month include For the Boys (** ½); Tales of Terror (** ½); Harry and Son (not screened); the Charles Bronson vehicle The White Buffalo (not screened); Convoy (***); The Hollywood Shuffle (***); Teachers (** ½); Little Man Tate (not screened); the 1990 version of Lord of the Flies, Blue Sky (not screened); 42nd Street (not screened); Bio Dome (No Stars); Cooley High (***) and Firewalker (not screened).
