My Biggest Fan

March 30, 2017

My heart is heavy with sadness over the loss of my (self-proclaimed) “biggest fan,” L. Nelson Moretz. Nelson was always the first to ‘like’ my column link post each week on Facebook followed by my own affirmation: “Love, hugs and smiles…” To which he always added: “to a very special lady.” His last post to me was Thursday, March 16th. He passed away quietly in his sleep before I posted the next week’s link. Tears flow easily and with great humility as I recall my lightness of heart, comforted by each post knowing he enjoyed and appreciated my endeavors to bring happiness, laughter and uplifting inspiration to you, my readers.

A man of many words, Nelson believed great conversation was an art form. Eloquently recalling fascinating tales of his travels through life intended to inspire and encourage those fortunate enough to spend time in his presence. It was obvious, after speaking to him for only a few minutes, he exuded respect for others, as well as life itself. Not only was the ‘art of conversation’ meaningful to him, he was a huge supporter of musicians and visual artists as well. Nelson frequented venues offering either or both. Extending praise and encouragement to all, he was loved by everyone who had the pleasure of meeting him. This kindhearted man called everyone a friend.

Attending Nelson’s funeral Sunday was a whirlwind of emotions for everyone. Stunned sadness was permeated with pronounced respect for a man who made it his life’s mission to serve and support others. Friends shared stories on Facebook of encouragement and inspiration offered by this humble man for the sole benefit of others. The sorrow of a great loss was felt in each post. I know in my heart, those of you who knew him feel the same.

The tears will eventually stop. The sadness will lift. What will remain are fond memories of: the echo of his laughter; his fascinating anecdotes; his kind words of encouragement; his warm smile; his tireless support and respect for his friends and always knowing Nelson was in your corner, ready to go cheer you on.

I’d always known Nelson admired my weekly morsel of motivation or entertainment because he never failed to tell me. However, what I didn’t know and discovered at his memorial service was just how often Nelson spoke of my column each week to everyone. Passing along my humorous tales, or sharing the heartfelt inspiration I poured into each prose as I encouraged others. To be so respected by L. Nelson Moretz is a great honor I will treasure always.

Inspired by his profound faith in me, I’ve decided to dedicate the book I’m releasing soon on Amazon to him. It will be a collection of my columns spanning all eleven years. I’d already dedicated it to you, my readers, for whom I am eternally grateful. Therefore, it will be a double dedication since every word I write is with you in my heart. It’s my way of giving back in life. Desiring for each of you to live your best life. And if I can make you laugh, or even smile just a little, what an added blessing. Because we are all blessed by our happiness and the happiness of others.

Looking forward, Nelson’s passing has rekindled my own desire to enrich and empower others. Looking back, I delight in the memories of Nelson spending Thanksgiving with my family, entertaining everyone with his boundless tales of incredible adventures. Nelson had the uncanny ability to make the ordinary extraordinary. We, bound by our earthly existence, have suffered a great loss. Yet, Heaven has gained one of the most incredible souls I’ve ever known. Goodbye my friend. You will always be well loved by those whose lives you touched.

Smiling at precious memories…
