Rabbit Hole

April 27, 2017

Is it true? Have we gone too far down the rabbit hole into a world of ‘let’s pretend it isn’t happening’? Content enough to never search for a better way. Existing solely to aimlessly revolve on the hamster wheel of our routines. Keeping our noses planted firmly in our lives as to not admit the world beyond our rabbit hole is collapsing on itself. Willingly detached, and allowing what we know to be ‘wrong’ to continue. We will only have ourselves to blame.

Except when we’re blaming others. You know who the ‘others’ are. All those outside our rabbit hole. It’s almost a game of ‘how many fingers’ can we point at once. This group blames that religion. That religion blames those people. Those people blame everyone.

It’s disheartening, isn’t it? When we peer out of our rabbit hole and actively spend a few minutes digesting what is happening around us via news reports, social media posts or simply being within earshot of watercooler conversation. Because what IS happening, is happening to our children, to our society, to our civilization.

Unfortunately, the immorally arrogant and sadistically self-righteous among the population are increasing exponentially with the boiling resentment fueling their vile malevolence. Unless the cruel chain of events effecting the lives of children born into this rebellious atmosphere of malicious intent is severed, the undesirable behavior is callously passed from generation to generation with haunting results: overcrowded prisons, school shootings, murder/suicides, drug overdoses, and the ever-increasing statistics on domestic violence.

It’s no wonder we prefer to stay cocooned in the false sense of security of our rabbit holes. Keeping to ourselves feels…well, safer. Waiting for someone else to ‘do the right thing’ has become as commonplace as a morning cup of coffee. Understandable, since most of us grew up with the moral echoes of “The Andy Griffith Show”, or “The Waltons” lulling us to sleep.

So then how did we get so far down the rabbit hole from “Goodnight, John-Boy”? Some would argue the paradigm of realism vs. liberalism. Others lay blame at the feet of moral decline. Then there are those who sit on the laurels of religious turmoil. Whichever path resonates with you doesn’t make or break the argument that civilization is losing its grip on the rudimentary essentials of human nature.

For each human being to survive: oxygen, food, water, shelter, and sleep are required. No argument there. However, for a society to endure and thrive basic elements need to be upheld. Such as: respect, empathy, gratitude, hope, love and forgiveness. Simple, yet powerful components utilized collectively, or exclusively, to interrupt and destroy the chains of malicious intent holding us hostage inside our rabbit holes. Together we can change the self-destructive path civilization has taken and chart a new course. The high road, if you will. Together we can emerge from hiding. No longer waiting for someone else to ‘do the right thing’. Instead, doing the right thing ourselves.

Honestly, if we’re going to point fingers, we might as well point them at ourselves. Hiding behind our lives, ignoring what’s going on around us is no longer working. As evidenced by the haunting results mentioned above. I care. I care about my daughter and my grandchildren. I also care about you and yours. Friends, let’s climb out of our rabbit holes and turn the tables on the immorally arrogant and sadistically self-righteous and make a stand for our children, our children’s children, and so on.

Can you imagine…a kinder, gentler world?

Smile, together we can!
