Mother Love

May 11, 2017

“The only love that I really believe in is a mother’s love for her children.” Karl Lagerfeld.

Love is an amazingly versatile emotion. It has the sovereignty to enchant with blissful joy or encase us in heart-wrenching sorrow. Brilliantly faceted, love spans the emotional spectrum from “forever” …to simply “loving” the roast beef you ate for lunch. However, the most steadfast and unconditional love is the love of a mother for her child(ern).

Mother Love beings at inception and endures for eternity. Never to be underestimated, it is the foundation on which a child’s nurturing commences. Gazing upon her newborn for the first time cannot be articulately expressed by any combination of prose. Words are only a conduit for conveying feelings, however, they fall short of embodying the impassioned abundance of Mother Love.

Mother Love comprises everything a child will ever require. It encourages. Teaches. Guides. Trusts. Understands. Questions. Sacrifices. Forgets. Listens. Speaks. Holds on. Lets go. Forgives. And the greatest of all…loves unconditionally.

This Mother’s Day, reflect on the Mother Love you received while growing up and continue to reap rewards from as an adult. Recall the immeasurable life lessons and poignant guidance your mother unceremoniously offered each miraculous inch you grew before her eyes. Yes, she loved you when you tested your boundaries as a precocious toddler. Kissing your boo-boos while softly reminding you not to venture too close the edge again. Only to set you back on your feet and watch as you returned to the source of your affliction. Tirelessly wiping away the tears of yet another boo-boo.

On your first day of school, she respectfully withheld hugs and kisses in front of your friends. Unbeknownst to you, the embarrassment you imagined would never surpass the void in her heart as she silently held her breath watching you walk away. A slight wave of your hand her only consolation.

Early school days were filled with childlike chats about the cutest kid in class. Until you were too old to discuss ‘cute’ classmates. As you learned to read and write it presented its own cache of challenges along with an endless stream of complicated math (word) problems. Yet, your mother weathered the storm of Spelling Bees and field trips with a ready smile and warm hug on extra difficult days. Proud of who you were becoming nonetheless.

As you grew, she endured your rebellious adolescence with a stern look, yet knowing smile. Trusting your judgement while silently praying for you to ‘grow out of it.’ You pushed, she pulled. You fought, she forgave. You slipped, she stretched out her arms and caught you. Holding you tightly, forever in the embrace of Mother Love.

Reaching adult hood, she relinquished the reins to you. Entrusting you to make decisions grounded in the beliefs and values you were taught growing up. Proudly admiring your accomplishments as you chart life on your own, she, in turn, spends many waking hours reminiscing about your youth. First word…mama. Taking your first unsteady steps. The first time she heard you laugh, never believing she’d hear a sweeter sound the rest of her life. It all happened so fast for her. Yet, fond memories continue to fuel the fire of her unconditional love for you.

As the years have etched themselves on her face, each line represents joy, sorrow, challenges, blessings and the endless, abundant love of a mother for her child. As on the day you were born…now…and forever; mere words fall short of expressing the impassioned abundance of Mother Love.

A child is a gift creating the greatest of blessings…Mother Love. Joy to each Mother this Mother’s Day!

Love, hugs and smiles…
