A Simple Request

April 10, 2014

Trust me, it isn’t often I’m rendered speechless yet I was blessed to witness an amazing act of charity last week leaving me choking back tears. First, allow me explain the events leading up to such altruism. My daughter’s father-in-law is in the hospital fighting for his life. Therefore, I’ve been taking care of my two grandchildren so my son-in-law can spend precious time with his father who needed emergency surgery April 3rd.

While my daughter joined her husband at the hospital during that time I stayed at their home. It was very upsetting for everyone to know there was a chance he would not pull through the difficult operation. Amazingly, the surgery went well and he was sent to ICU. Dozing on their couch when my daughter came home late that evening with exhaustion, concern and worry written all over her face I shook off sleep to ask how things went. She briefly explained the surgery and that he is fighting an enormous battle to live.

The next morning my daughter went to work and my son-in-law to the hospital. Shortly after I’d put little Stormy to bed for his mid-morning nap my daughter called to say her work sent her to join her husband at the hospital, which I thought was such a blessing—to be able to support him during a difficult time. Then she asked if the kids and I needed anything just as little Stormy was waking up. Realizing he awoke with an extremely potent diaper I asked her if there were more diaper wipes because there was only one left in the plastic case. She apologetically assumed that was probably all there was.

Dickens, Stormy had a loaded diaper (probably a triple-wiper) and I only had one wipe. Well, this wasn’t my first rodeo so I assured her I could handle it with a wash cloth. Okay in a pinch, but my daughter believed the situation called for more wipes so after we hung up she phoned a friend to drop some off. Now, you may not consider diaper wipes an emergency, but then you’ve probably never changed a triple-wiper diaper. Saved by the doorbell, which rang a few hours later, I answered it to find her friend standing on the stoop with a couple grocery bags. My first thought was my daughter asked her to pick up a few more things. Suddenly, I was speechless as Sunshine and I helped her carry in nearly $200 worth of groceries. Including a rotisserie chicken…still warm! Stunned speechless at the selfless act of kindness and generosity I finally found the words to thank her. To which she responded, “I didn’t want her (my daughter) to worry about having to go to the store and I know you’re stuck here (without car seats).” Choking back tears I stammered, “Would you like some lunch?” After all, she’d bought all kinds of food, supplies and even treats for the cat. She politely declined and just as quickly as she came she was gone. Tantamount to unexpectedly glimpsing a miracle of abundance I sent a text to my daughter and told her the amazing story. She immediately called to ask what her friend had done and still choking back tears I excitedly explained. Commenting that her friend kept offering to help, she certainly and unselfishly had seized an opportunity to go above and beyond and fill the need of another with no expectations of the favor ever being returned. All because of a simple request for a package of diaper wipes.

When my daughter sent her friend a text to thank her she responded, “God paid the bill.” Yes, I was speechless and cried tears of gratitude at the outpouring of compassion from another’s heart. What a blessing to have friends that would perform such an incredible act of charity. The kindness and unselfish generosity of a few bags of groceries will forever be etched in my heart.

Can you imagine…filling a simple request with abundance?

Smile and feel blessed.
