What? Tebow Again
April 23, 2015
I thought we were all done with this. We have been told over and over that Tim Tebow does not have the skill set to be a NFL quarterback.
It looks like Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly is putting his reputation for offensive genius on the line. Yes, the Eagles signed Tebow to a one-year contract over the weekend. The same Tim Tebow that has not seen action on a football field since the 2012 season.
There is no question that the Eagles are now the most intriguing team in professional football heading into 2015. Interesting, because Kelly has overhauled the Eagles’ roster by (among other things) trading what appeared to be a better than average starting quarterback (Nick Foles) for an injury-prone one (Sam Bradford) and by letting go a popular All-Pro runningback (LeSean McCoy) in favor of a different All-Pro running back in DeMarco Murray.
And now the Tebow signing though word is the lightning rod quarterback will be competing for a third string job behind Bradford and Mark Sanchez. One has to wonder about the motivation for the signing.
Why would Kelly take a chance on a quarterback with an odd skill set who hasn’t played the sport in two years. I wonder if Kelly feels his style of offense can work with virtually any athlete. Of course, Bradford will likely get hurt again. And Sanchez. Well, he can self-destruct at any moment.
Anyway, Tebow is getting the last chance most thought he would never get. His fans are thrilled. The people who don’t like Tebow tend not to like him these days because they feel he doesn’t deserve another shot at the NFL, because they feel that he is being pumped up by the media cycle at ESPN, because they feel that he’s a college quarterback with college skills who couldn’t possibly make it in the world of professional football. They likely don’t like Tebow because he doesn’t fit any sort of professional template, and therefore, they feel, he doesn’t deserve any more chances.
And they may be right. It’s possible that Tebow will never play in a regular-season game with the Eagles; it’s possible that Kelly will experiment with him and decide, as Bill Belichick did that Tebow isn’t a fit for his team.
Whatever Kelly has in mind, Tebow is back. I do not see the media circus existing like it has in the past. But he is back.
Johnny Football Is Also Back
Can you believe we went two months without any Johnny Manziel off the field stories? Hard to believe. But he is also back.
Manziel finished his “self-imposed” rehab a week ago and is back in the news. So far, there have not been any reports of excessive partying concerning the Cleveland Browns quarterback.
My readers have heard me repeat over and over again that I do not see Manziel achieving much success on the field. I still don’t see it though I guess you could call rehab a positive step. But he still has a way to go before he can legitimately walk back onto the field for his team.
Eagles’ coach Chip Kelly
Manziel lost all trust within the franchise last season after making a mess of his hand-delivered starting assignment last year. And it’s the way he handled that assignment that makes his teammates wonder.
Once Manziel entered rehab (we still don’t know what exactly the rehab was for), we heard more and more reports coming from teammates of his transgressions and behaviors. Bottom line is that his teammates are wondering if he can put football over everything else in his life.
Cleveland is covering itself this time around in the event Manziel chooses to party instead of attending team meetings. They have signed quarterback Josh McCown and have their eyes on Sam Bradford and Marcus Mariota.
