Goodell/Brady Have Their Meeting

June 25, 2015

Roger Goodell and Tom Brady, the NFL commissioner and the league’s four-time Super Bowl quarterback, met face-to-face Tuesday morning. If you thought it would be just the two of them, forget it. They will each arrive with lawyers, a bunch of them. And we do not know how long it will take before Judge Goodell rules on Brady’s appeal.

Officially, Goodell is the judge and Brady is the convict seeking appellate relief from a four-game suspension and loss of about $1.8 million in salary for what the NFL deemed was his role in the deflation of footballs used in January’s AFC championship game.

In my eyes, this story has been built on suspicion and perception. Neither side trusts each other. It has been fueled by wild speculation, media leaks and spin. It has left both Goodell and Brady trying to claw for a measure of respect in a strange scandal where each man’s stature has taken a hit.

I know the lost games and money matter to Brady, but I believe he is fighting mostly for his reputation. Goodell meanwhile is trying to walk a thin line that leaves him with the appearance of competency while trying to protect both the NFL’s judicial system and the investigative process.

Tom Brady

I honestly don’t think either will come out of this too well in terms of legacy.

It seems to me that a strong majority of the population feels Brady is a cheater and always will be. The media turned on him, even before the damaging news from the Ted Wells’ report.

And do you really think Goodell could admit the NFL got the entire deflate-gate story completely wrong? That he would deem Wells’ report speculative and flawed?,

Goodell and the league already has so little credibility that the presumption among many is that Goodell cannot afford to come down off his original punishment. If so, it will appear he is playing favorites, or that he made a deal to clear Brady in exchange for Patriots owner Robert Kraft standing down on a lawsuit.

In any event, the story this time centers around on how much can Brady win back? How much can Goodell give back? Can either maintain any respectability? Will Brady change his mind and let the NFL see certain cell phone info? Will Goodell try to save face by throwing Wells under the bus? Or does the league just stick to its story and count on its fans believing Brady and the Pats are cheaters?

Bad Stuff Can Happen To Good Guys

Tim Duncan is one of the ‘good guys’ of the NBA. Known as Mr. Fundamental, Duncan is admired on the court and in the business world.

He has employed multiple financial advisers to help run his businesses. And he thought he could trust them all. Turns out he was wrong with one guy.

Tim Duncan got ripped off

Back in 2013 when Duncan was going through his divorce and he and staff members started going through his finances and discovered that one of his former financial advisers, Charles Banks, bilked Duncan out of millions of dollars over many years without Duncan’s knowledge.

Bloomberg came out this week and estimated the amount to be upwards of $25 million in losses to Charles Banks. Duncan made an approximate $225 million in earnings over his career to date. Not including profits from business and endorsements, I’m guessing he will be just fine. But that said, if Banks is proven guilty in court for taking the money, he deserves what is coming to him. And I am sure Duncan will take steps to make sure it does not happen again.

What About A-Rod?

I have to admit that I was wrong about Alex Rodriguez. I wrote in these pages a few times that he was done and would not be a factor for the New York Yankees.

A-Rod gets an apology from Sid

A-Rod is actually the Yankees most productive offensive player to date.

Last Friday night, Rodriguez became the 29th member of the 3,000th hit club. Like it or not, he is in the 3,000 hit club. And like it or not, he recently passed Willie Mays on the all-time homerun list.

Obviously A-Rod’s career achievements are in question because of his admitted performance-enhancing drug use. His hit total, his home run total, everything is tainted to some degree. That’s just the way it is. Rodriguez brought that on himself.
