Westbrook Is My MVP

April 13, 2017

Russell Westbrook is the best player in the NBA right now and that is why he should be the league’s MVP. Yet, likely since it seems like the NBA’s selection seems to be the most prestigious MVP award of all the professional sports, there is a great deal of controversy about the vote.

James Harden and LeBron James are Westbrook’s primary competition for the award.

Along with winning the eye test as the best player in the game, you may have heard that Westbrook will end the season as the first player to average a triple-double (31.9 points, 10.7 rebounds, 10.4 assists entering the final two games) since Oscar Robertson in 1961-62. Over the weekend, Westbrook passed Robertson for most triple-doubles in a season at 42. The Thunder are 33-9 in those games.

Russell Westbrook

This, after Kevin Durant left the Oklahoma Thunder and left Westbrook with a team of no-names. Few thought the Thunder would reach the playoffs without Durant. Yet, Westbrook got the Thunder into the sixth seed in the Western Conference?

I can’t believe there’s still a debate. Most of the debate centers around the fact that Harden and James are on teams with better records. Harden is on a loaded Houston Rockets team that are 54-27 as I write this. The Thunder are 46-34. Eight more wins. And we know James and the Cavs, the defending titleholders, have a much better roster.

Oklahoma City would be one of the worst teams in the NBA if not for Westbrook. And again, do not forget that he broke a record that most thought was unbreakable.

Romo Retires To The TV Booth

The talk of the NFL Free Agent season came to an unexpected close last week as Tony Romo announced that he is not seeking to join another franchise. Instead, he is moving to CBS Sports and will be a color analyst with Jim Nantz on the network’s top broadcast team.

Rumors and speculation over Romo’s future  began the minute the Dallas Cowboys were eliminated in the playoffs.

Tony Romo

Dallas, with Dak Prescott clearly the team’s quarterback of the present and the future, were coy about it’s plans for Romo. Yet, it appears they let Romo look for another team before the 36-year old chose to step off the field and into the booth.

It is likely a wise choice since he’s had two back surgeries and collarbone surgery. One wrong hit and his back, along with the fortunes of the team who signed him, could suffer long term repercussions.

Romo spoke freely recently of his legacy and that is why he wanted to continue playing if he could. He is worried that he is leaving a legacy of injuries, regular-season wins and playoff failures.

Romo was 2-4 in the playoffs, never reaching a Super Bowl and perhaps being best known for an infamous botched snap in 2007 that cost the Cowboys a chance to beat the Seahawks in a wild-card game. He never answered the myth that he could win the “big game.”

And that is a shame because Romo was always one of the top 10 signal callers in the league when he played.
