Golden State Better Do It This Year

May 25, 2017

The Golden State Warriors will be favored in any NBA Finals matchup this year. There are a number of reasons this “superteam” better answer the bell.

The signing of free agent Kevin Durant was supposed to seal the deal. It meant that even LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers would not be able to beat them in the Finals again. Losing to James this year would be devastating to the franchise, so much so that the core of the team may break up as a result.

Actually, they better win it this season because the potential for the team to break up is already there. The championship window may be closing for this group.

For one thing, history tells us that dynasties do not exist in the sport anymore. The Celtics’ Big 3 won one title, the Heat Big 3 won two titles. LeBron and Cleveland’s have one, and will not be favored in this one if they get by the Celtics. Secondly, there are health issues. Steph Curry and Durant seem to be injured more and more. Head Coach Steve Kerr has missed large portions of this current season so who knows what his future is?

Stephan Curry

And you always have to follow the money. And money usually leads to team chemistry issues.  As long as they win, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green will settle for lesser roles. But Curry and Durant will soon be free agents. They will get max contracts while Thompson and Green will be offered max contracts by other teams. And role players like Andre Iguodala, JaVale McGee, and the bench will want more money that does not exist.

I may be wrong on this one but I will repeat it. The Warriors better win this one or the 2015 title could be their last one for awhile.

Did He Or Didn’t He?

Concussions and football go together more and more it seems with the passage of time. Even though we will not see football on the field for a few months, the topic of concussions found its way back in the sporting pages last week.

With the attention brought to concussions and the diagnosis of them by Tom Brady’s wife who stated that her husband has had concussions over the years and never told team officials of them, the talk now is about the choice athletes have after possibly getting one, should they tell anyone of the symptoms or keep it quiet.

Another high profile quarterback, Drew Brees, has admitted that he would try to hide the injury from his wife. I guess that means he would not tell his team.

Tom Brady & Ben Roethlisberger

Conversely, another well known signal caller, Ben Roethlisberger, faced a similar decision back in 2015 and recently told a reporter that he is glad he told team officials. The Steelers quarterback took himself out at Seattle complaining of vision issues, and was taken to the locker room for testing.

Big Ben was quoted as saying that he has hid injuries in the past but was not going to when it came to his head. He spoke of how you can replace a lot of body parts, but you can’t replace a brain. He mentioned that players have to think about their family and long term health.

Of course, not everyone has the same kind of financial and starting job security as Roethlisberger, who can know with great certainty that he’s going back on the field for the Steelers as soon as he’s well.

But Brady and Brees have similar job security and they reportedly chose to stay quiet. Such is life in the NFL and the pressures of winning. Brady has been quietly missing in action since his wife’s statement came out so we may never know if he truly had a concussion.
