Newton, NC – The Catawba County Library System is offering percussion experiences to children and teens as part of its annual Summer Learning series. Leading the music sessions is the Hickory Music Factory, a local organization that fosters creativity through music and seeks to empower young people through various types of music education programs.
At each of the library’s locations listed, Hickory Music Factory will set up a drum circle, where children can learn how to create beats and make rhythms and then share them with others. Not only does this exercise build teamwork and collaboration, but it also helps children understand how a drum functions and how various percussion instruments lend different tones and effects to musical works.
All children and teens are invited to attend the free sessions. Having prior experience with an instrument or knowing how to read music are not pre-requisites. Just come out, sit in, and have fun!

Wednesday, July 25 at 10am, Main Library in Newton
Wednesday, July 25 at noon, Conover Branch
Wednesday, July 25 at 2pm, Claremont Branch
Summer Learning is an annual program that the library hosts throughout June, July, and early August. It’s intended to help kids avoid the ‘summer slide,’ or loss of skills that can happen when they’re not in school daily.
