Newton, NC – Throughout February, the Catawba County Library will be celebrating Black History Month by showcasing “movies that matter” and screening them each Wednesday afternoon at 4pm at the Main Library in Newton.

As a group, these movies provide a powerful perspective on the African-American experience and help remember the men and women whose lives and stories have contributed so richly to our heritage.

Following the last weekly movie, Associate Professor of History Dr. Veronica McComb of Lenoir-Rhyne University will lead a conversation about the movies and the issues they address.

The series includes:

February 13: The Tuskegee Airmen – Tracks the experience of the first African-American fighter pilots in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII and their quest for respect and acceptance. 60 minutes.

February 20: Race – Describes track-and-field athlete Jesse Owens’ path to gold-medal victory in the 1936 Berlin Olympics, despite Hitler’s promotion of Aryan supremacy. 135 minutes.

February 27: More Than a Month – African-American film director Shukree Tilghman crosses the country trying to get support for ending Black History Month as separate from American history. 60 minutes.
