Newton, NC – On July 27th at 7:30 pm, the Old Post Office Playhouse is pleased to present Strength in Song, a benefit concert featuring music from Chelsea West & Vincent Agrusa. One hundred percent of the proceeds from this concert will go to Headstrong.

Chelsea West is a native of Newton, NC. She graduated from Mars Hill University with an English degree & is currently pursuing a double Masters of Divinity and English, with a writing focus. She started singing in elementary school, and she has been involved in numerous school, church, and community choirs over the years.

Vincent Agrusa is from Franklin, NC. He started playing piano at age 10. Vincent performs with school, community, and church groups regularly. He also graduated from Mars Hill University with a degree in piano performance. He will be attending the University of South Carolina in the fall to pursue a Masters of the Arts in Piano Performance.

Chelsea and Vinnie have been friends since 2011 when they were both freshmen at MHU. They were in choir together through college and have performed together in the Southern Appalachian Chamber Singers. They both have a passion for music and are thrilled to share their gifts with the community.

Strength in Song explores various ways that people can find strength. Incorporating both vocal and piano music, the program will include music dealing with three major things people draw strength from. The music will include spirituals, classical piano, and classical vocal repertoire focusing on faith, love, and nature. All proceeds from the recital will go to Headstrong, and we hope you’ll join us for a night of finding Strength in Song!

This cause is especially close to Chelsea’s heart. In 2014, Chelsea lost her older brother, a Marine, to suicide. Since then she has been working to draw attention to the issue of mental health support for soldiers and veterans. Headstrong is a wonderful organization that is also working to provide mental health support and services to veterans and their families. Vinnie was graciously willing to support his friend in this endeavor. Chelsea is thrilled to be working with such an important organization to provide veterans and their families with the help and support they may need.

Mental health among US Veterans is a subject that, until recent years, has been largely ignored or swept under the rug. Veteran suicide rates are alarmingly high. Almost 22 veterans are taking their own lives each day. Headstrong provides mental health services to veterans and their families. They help veterans to find their own strength and overcome the challenges they face. Thanks to Headstrong and other similar organizations, veterans are able to receive the help they may need.
