Hickory – USCF National Chess Master Tim Hanks, and Exodus Works have organized a chess event where Tim will play 20 opponents simultaneously. The event is designed to encourage and support chess play in Hickory and Western North Carolina. The August 16th event will take place at Exodus Works, 610 4th St. SW, Hickory, NC 28602 from 11 AM until 2 PM. There is a $10 entry fee for each player. Spectators are welcome and encouraged to attend (free admission) and to enjoy the exhibition.
To register to play and reserve a board, contact Exodus Works Administration at 828-962-8195 or 828-324-4870. Tim will play the queen’s gambit opening in at least one game in recognition of the interest in chess generated by the television miniseries, “The Queen’s Gambit.”
Chess enthusiasts will be available to discuss opportunities for local chess play, possible formation of local chess clubs, especially in schools, learning opportunities, and possible classes, including those to earn Scout Merit Badges.
