Hickory – ACAP Hickory (Adult Children of Aging Parents) presents “Walking a Mile in Their Shoes: Experiencing Aging” on Tuesday, April 10, 5:30-7:00 p.m., in the Fellowship Hall of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, Hickory (2780 N. Center Street, Hickory). Speaker for the program is Mr. Kim Harris, Executive Director, Brookdale Hickory, Northeast.
Despite all the commercials for medical interventions, creams, “potions,” pills and surgeries, no one has figured out how to truly stop the clock. We age. And, these days, more of us are living longer. While those of us who are younger really can’t know what it’s like to be in our 80’s, 90’s or beyond, the April ACAP Hickory will offer an opportunity to experience aging. The goal of the program is to allow attendees to experience the limitations and challenges that often accompany aging so we may better understand what our loved ones experience, be more effective caregivers and advocates, and begin to prepare for our own elderhood.
Mr. Kim Harris, Executive Director of Brookdale Hickory, Northeast, will discuss typical challenges of elderhood and help attendees experience physical aspects of aging through a series of exercises that will simulate limited flexibility and feeling in hands, often experienced with arthritis; vision issues, from presbyopia to macular degeneration, cataract, diabetic eye disease and glaucoma; hearing loss as a result of years of loud noises and, sometimes, disease; and losing sense of smell and taste, a result of olfactory function decline and/or taste disorders that can affect an elder’s eating and nutrition as well as cause safety concerns when combined with vision limitations.
