Newton, NC – The Green Room Community Theatre is thrilled to announce audition dates for the 17th Annual Shakespeare in the Park production, Hamlet! Shakespeare’s Hamlet is a tragedy; a ghost story of murder and revenge, streamlined and set in a Gothic milieu. Original songs and background music were created for this production.
No experience is required! We plan to cast 15-30 actors ages 14 and up. There are roles for performers with varying degrees of experience. The director is open to non-traditional casting, both in age and especially in gender, and some actors may be cast in more than one role. All ethnicities are welcome.
Everyone will participate in cold readings from the script. Actors may prepare a monologue of 1-2 minutes in length, but this is not required. Excerpts from Hamlet’s more famous speeches are suggested for any male or female actor seriously interested in a major role such as Hamlet, Claudius, Polonius, Gertrude, Ophelia, or the 1st Player.
Although this is not a musical, several performers will sing, notably Ophelia and the gravedigger. You may be asked to perform a few bars of a folk song. You may choose to prepare accordingly if you wish, singing in a folksy style. This audition will be short and to the point.
Auditions will be on July 25 & 26, 2022 at 7:00 pm at the Old Post Office Playhouse located at 10 South Main Avenue, Newton, NC 28658. Please enter at the lower-level door at the back of the building (on South Ashe Avenue). You only need to attend one night of auditions. Please do not park in the South Square parking lot.
You must be available for all performances. This show will be performed outdoors at Southside Park in Newton. Please bring your list of rehearsal conflicts with you. You MUST be able to attend all of Tech Week (the week before the show opens) unless in rare emergency cases an exception is approved before being cast by the director.
Hamlet is directed by Jonathan Ray. It is produced by Catawba Valley Community College and The City of Newton. Production dates are Sept. 30 & Oct 1, 7, 8, 2022 at 7:30 pm each evening at Southside Park in Newton. Shakespeare in the Park performances are free and open to the public.
