Certain to make my year-end worst list for the calendar year of 2018, Blockers is the latest to come off the assembly lines of director/writer Judd Apatow’s production company and to say it’s a pedestrian effort is being awfully kind. This is the kind of film where projectile vomiting, alcoholic beverages being consumed anally and bare male appendages being shoved into the faces of characters are supposed to pass for comedy. Mind you, I’m far from a prude and have laughed quite heartily at a few gross out comedies in my day but Blockers comes from the minds of writers who seem to be unable to differentiate between gross and funny or just being gross for the simple sake of being gross. Throw in some dull and uninteresting characters into the mix and you have one of the worst examples of what passes for funny in some circles these days. The wafer thin plot concerns a trio of nosey, micro managing parents (John Cena, Leslie Mann, Ike Barenholtz) who make it their mission to ensure that their kids aren’t deflowered on their prom night. The kids, of course, have other plans and the adults spend the night chasing them from one suburban development to another. Strangely, it takes these parents an entire night to make the trek in spite of the fact that in the real world the neighborhoods would likely be a 5-10 minute drive. Regardless, the whole mess is neither fun nor funny.
At press time, the movie playing in Hickory, and all around the area.
