Hickory – USCF National Chess Master Tim Hanks, and Big Chair Chess Club organizer and chess enthusiast, Eugene Brown, have organized a chess event where Tim Hanks will play 20 plus games simultaneously. The event is designed to celebrate National Chess Day and to encourage and support chess play in Hickory and Western North Carolina. The October 14th event will take place at the Ridgeview Recreation Center, 115 7th Avenue, SW, in Hickory from 11 AM until 3 PM. This event is free and open to the public. Spectators are welcome and encouraged to attend to enjoy the experience.
The event does not require registration and will seat players on a first come/ first serve basis. When any game is complete, another player may take the empty seat and play. Play will continue until time expires or all games are completed, whichever comes first. Tim will play the queen’s gambit opening in at least one game in recognition of the interest in chess generated by the recent television miniseries, “The Queen’s Gambit.”
Chess enthusiasts will be available to discuss opportunities for local chess play, possible formation of local chess clubs, especially in schools, learning opportunities, and possible classes, including those to earn Scout Merit Badges.
