Hickory – A special luncheon honoring educators will be held on Saturday, September 29, from Noon to 3pm at the Highland Recreation Center, 1451 8th Street Drive NE, Hickory, NC, 28601.
Special guest Senator Jeff Jackson, from Mecklenburg County, will share the importance of early childhood education and the challenges facing education in North Carolina. Educators and their families are invited to attend this free event catered by Jason’s Deli, hosted by Ric and Angela Vandett.
Ric Vandett taught English and coached football and girls basketball at North Wilkes High School. He was an assistant principal, principal, director, assistant superintendent, and superintendent of Hickory Public Schools. He also served as Executive Director of the Southwest Education Alliance, a consortia of eleven school districts that provides collaborative opportunities for teachers and administrators to share best practices. “I love the work, the students, and the community. I will take my experience and passion for education to Raleigh, and fight for our children, our teachers, and our public schools as a member of the NC Senate,” said Vandett.
“We must encourage our public education system to train our future workforce so that we can provide employers with knowledgeable workers and, in turn, attract more businesses to locate here. Strengthening the public school system will take time, focus, and funding. The damage done in the last decade will not be easily undone. We need common-sense legislation that holds charter schools to the same standards as public schools, and we must treat educators for what they are, dedicated professionals who are so important in preparing the next generation for successful and prosperous lives.”
