Hickory – Local actress and teacher Hollie Sherrill returns to the Hickory Community Theatre stage as Mom in True West, opening Friday, April 13 in the Firemen’s Kitchen. Sherrill was most recently seen as Julia in Lend Me a Tenor on the main stage in January. Her character is off stage for most of the play, away on a trip to Alaska while her younger son Austin watches over her house. She returns to find her kitchen in a shambles following a pitched battle between Austin and his brother Lee.
Sherrill, who has been involved in local community theatre for several years, has enjoyed many wonderful roles. Along with Lend Me a Tenor some of her favorite roles at HCT include Vernadette in Dixie Swim Club and Patsy Quince in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
When asked what she likes most about working at Hickory Community Theatre she replied, “HCT is like another home to me. I love the way community is the heart and soul of the theatre. I’ve made many lifelong friends working on shows.” She was drawn to True West mainly because of the author.
“Honestly, I wanted to do a Sam Shepherd show. I tend to be cast in comedies more than edgy dramas with tension release comedy. I like the roller coaster ride between the brothers.”
When she’s not on stage Sherrill teaches drama at Bandy’s High School. She holds a BS from Appalachian State University and a Masters’ in Education from UNC Greensboro.
Performances of True West are Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm (Apr 13, 14, 20, 21, 27 & 28); Thursdays at 7:30pm (Apr 19 & 26); and Sundays at 2:30pm (Apr 22 & 29.)
