Hickory, NC – Lenoir-Rhyne University’s Visiting Writers Series will present Hmong-American author Kao Kalia Yang, Thursday, March 21, at 7 p.m. in Belk Centrum. This event will be held in partnership with the Hickory International Council.
Yang is the author of two novels and has one forthcoming children’s book, “A Map Into the World,” which will be published this fall. Her first novel, “The Latehomecomer: A Hmong Family Memoir,” is winner of the 2009 Minnesota Book Awards in Creative Nonfiction/Memoir and Reader’s Choice, and a finalist for the PEN USA Award in Creative Nonfiction and the Asian Literary Award in Nonfiction. Her second book, “The Song Poet,” won the 2016 Minnesota Book Award in Creative Nonfiction Memoir. It was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Chautauqua Prize, a PEN USA Award in Nonfiction and the Dayton’s Literary Peace Prize.
Yang has taught at Columbia University in New York City, New York, Metropolitan State University in Denver, Colorado, and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Recently, Yang was the Benedict Distinguished Visiting Faculty in American Studies and English at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota.
