Newton, NC – To make technology accessible to everyone, the Catawba County Library regularly showcases the many ways it can be used in real-life situations. At the library’s next Adult STEAM workshop, participants will make jewelry by designing and printing objects on the library’s 3-D printer.

The class takes place at 6 pm on Thursday, August 15 at the Main Library in Newton. Register by calling 828.465.8665.

Using Tinkercad, a free online program that features computer-aided design (CAD) tools, attendees will learn to produce simple designs for earrings, necklaces, or bracelets using geometric shapes and letters. Then, they’ll take these digital files and use the 3-D printer to transform them into actual objects before adding clasps and posts as finishing touches.

Participants can get inspiration for their designs from the library’s in-house resources or bring their own ideas to the workshop to see how they might be implemented. All supplies will be provided.

In addition to the jewelry being made in this class, the 3-D printer can be used to generate everything from small toys and kids’ trophies to decorative household accessories and even replacement parts for tools and gadgets. To learn more about the possibilities, speak to the digital services librarian at 828.465.9494.
