Now in Theaters:

Strays (* ½) Two dogs team up to get revenge on their owner in this unfunny comedy which seems to think humor only comes in one form-the scatological kind. Will Ferrell and Jamie Foxx provide the voices but even they can’t elevate this tired material.

Black Beetle -The latest DC Comics adaptation-the 14th in the DC universe-has also been released or unleashed depending on your point of view. Xolo Mariduena stars as the title character whose suit of armor possesses extraordinary powers, the intended audience being those who aren’t aware of Iron Man, I suppose.

New to Disc:

Weird Science (1985) John Hughes’ tale of two misfits who create a girlfriend for themselves via their computer gets a 4K upgrade this week in a new edition that retains the extras found on the previous Blu Ray set. There are three cuts of the film included as well.

Scream/Shout Factory:

Coma (1978) Michael Crichton’s terrific film adaptation of the Robin Cook novel, concerning a doctor’s attempts to get to the bottom of a series of mysterious deaths in a Boston hospital, gets a Blu Ray upgrade in a new edition that includes a freshly recorded commentary.

Also, the tech thriller, Hackers (1995), starring Angelina Jolie, gets the deluxe treatment as part of the Shout Select line of titles.

The label has a new Blu Ray release of the animated Ralph Bakshi film, American Pop (1981) and a 4K upgrade of the sequel, The Legend of Zorro (2005) on tap this week. Both contain previously issued bonus material.

Hardcore (1979) George C. Scott is a Midwest father attempting to locate his runaway daughter in the seedy adult film world in Paul Schrader’s morality tale. Previously available but out of print, this new edition retains some of the extras found on the previous edition.

Three Into Two Won’t Go (1969) Rod Steiger is a middle-aged married man carrying on an affair with a 19-year-old in this drama. An alternate cut of the film is included along with a new commentary.

Pretty Baby (1978) Louis Malle’s controversial film dealing with the subject of teen prostitution in the early 20th century also makes its way to Blu Ray this week. Bonus materials include several interviews, commentary and a video essay.

The label has the two new recent releases, the comedy-drama, You Hurt My Feelings (2023) and the horror entry, The Blackening (2023), getting disc issues this week with a few new featurettes.

The animated classic, The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), gets a 4K upgrade this week from the label with previously issued extras being ported over.
