The Great Lillian Hall (*** ½) Jessica Lange turns in a towering performance in this terrific portrait of a celebrated star of Broadway in the throes of Lewy Body Dementia and her attempts to stave off the disease and give her fans one last hurrah. Kathy Bates is equally good as her assistant in this outstanding drama, the kind that routinely used to show up in theaters but rarely does anymore.

 

NEW TO DISC:

 

Arrow:

Mute Witness (1996) Anthony Waller’s stylishly made tale of a mute special effects artist who chances upon a murder makes its 4K debut this week from the label. Bonus materials include new commentaries, behind the scenes footage and visual essays.

 

Film Movement:

 The Sales Girl (2023) is a Russian import and coming of age tale regarding a college student’s experiences working in a sex shop and the friendship that develops between the girl and her boss. An award winner in a number of film festivals around the world.

 

Criterion:

 Querelle (1982) The final film of Rainer Werner Fassbinder, the tale of a sailor (Brad Davis) who causes quite a commotion when he comes ashore, makes its Blu-Ray debut in this new edition which also includes a new interview and documentary.

 

Shout/Scream Factory:

 Species II (1998) The sci-fi sequel comes to 4K UHD in a new edition that retains the previously issued extras in addition to the uptick in picture.

 

Kino:

 Remembering Gene Wilder (2023) Audio clips from the celebrated actor’s life forms the basis of this documentary portrait that offers some illumination as to what made him tick and now arriving on Blu-Ray.

 

Warner Brothers:

 Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire (2024) The sequel to the 2021 film, Godzilla Versus Kong, makes its disc debut on both 4K and Blu-Ray formats.

 

Universal:

All four of the Shrek films are being issued in 4K in a new set entitled, Shrek-4 Movie Collection (2001-2010). Previously issued bonus materials have been ported over.

 

88 Films:

Two action films starring Michelle Yeoh and previously issued as part of the In the Line of Fire Blu-Ray box last year, Yes, Madam (1985) and Royal Warriors (1986), are being issued separately for those who want to purchase the films by themselves. Extras are the same as those on the previous release.

 

Masters of Cinema:

 The Valiant Ones (1975) The celebrated Taiwanese filmmaker Kink Hu’s actioner about a group of warriors taking on Japanese pirates makes its Blu-Ray debut in this new set that includes multiple interviews and commentary.
