It is quite obvious that Bill Belichick’s plan with the North Carolina Football Program has not panned out thus far.
When Belichick took the UNC job, he did so with a list of conditions. He wanted a low buyout in case the NFL came calling. After all, he stands just 25 wins short of the most wins in NFL history. UNC said yes.
Belichick wanted his two sons on the staff. UNC said yes.
He wanted his best friend, Michael Lombardi, to be his general manager. UNC said yes.
He wanted his partner, Jordon Hudson, to be involved in his media matters. UNC said yes.
Whatever Belichick wanted, he got.

Lets move the calendar forward 18 months. Oh how things have changed.
The NFL didn’t come calling last season despite 10 vacancies, It is hard to fathom that Belichick will be sought after by the NFL. He has stumbled to a disaster on and off the field in the college game. Belichick jumped into college coaching as a way to return to the NFL, and now that motivation is likely gone.
And then last week, UNC announced Michael Lombardi was under investigation for an HR incident. It quickly became apparent Lombardi was likely damaged beyond repair in his role at the highest paid GM in college sports.
So, the NFL isn’t happening. Belichick’s biggest confidant is at legal war with the university. What’s left?
Can this 2026 team improve upon last season’s disastrous 4-8 year, Perhaps so if Belichick discovered he loves coaching college football and pride takes over. Will he be determined to show everyone he’s still a great coach?
Or maybe most of the reasons he took this job in the first place no longer apply.
