Hickory – Hickory Community Theatre (HCT) is thrilled to announce the opening of The Squirrels, a bold and darkly comic play by Tony Award-nominated playwright Robert Askins. The production will open on October 18, 2024, and run through November 2, 2024, at HCT’s historic Jeffers Theatre.

The Squirrels is a wild and satirical exploration of power dynamics, survival instincts, and social divisions—told from the perspective of a feuding squirrel community. Set in a tree as winter approaches, the play uses clever wit and biting humor to explore themes of class, privilege, and resource hoarding. The question at the heart of the production: Who will control the future of the tree and its precious food supply?

“We are excited to bring this sharp and thought-provoking play to the Hickory stage,” said Eric Seale, Artistic Director of HCT. “The Squirrels not only offers a hilarious take on human behaviors through the lens of animals but also challenges us to reflect on our own society in an entertaining and engaging way.”

Performances will run from October 18 through November 2. Admission is $18 for adults and $12 for students and youth 18 and under. For tickets visit hickorytheatre.org or call 828-328-2283.

The Squirrels is rated R for adult language and mammalian violence, and contains nuts.

The Squirrels is produced by Diane’s Shelter. The 76th season at HCT is sponsored by A Cleaner World, Protection Products, Inc., Shurtape Technologies and LifeRootz. The Hickory Community Theatre is a funded affiliate of Arts Culture Catawba and receives sustaining support funding from the North Carolina Arts Council, a Division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, a state agency.
