Monday night was not supposed to end like it did. College Football’s National Championship game was played on Monday and Georgia emerged with the championship.
History tells us that the ending was unexpected. Alabama plays in this game annually it seems. Georgia had not won a national title in 40 years. The Crimson Tide’s quarterback won the Heisman. Georgia’s quarterback arrived in Athens as a walk-on. Alabama’s head coach Nick Saban has won a record seven national championships. Georgia’s head coach Kirby Smart was an assistant under Saban for over a decade and has never beaten his former mentor.
The Bulldogs won it all for the first time since 1980, defeating the Crimson Tide by a 33-18 count at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. Stetson Bennett, who now has a scholarship, threw two touchdown passes in the final 8:09, to give Georgia a lead that was never threatened. The loaded Bulldogs defense had already proved it could stop Alabama as the Tide held Alabama to just one touchdown in four trips into the red zone Defensive back Kelee Ringo sealed the deal with his 79-yard interception return for a touchdown.
A Few Words On The Panthers
Embattled head coach Matt Rhule has apparently kept his job. His second year on the NFL’s sidelines was not any better than year one. In fact, it was worse.
We were told he was an offensive wizard when he was the head coach at Temple and Baylor.
The Panthers are 10-23 in two seasons under Rhule and the team’s offense has been among the worst in the league. Carolina’s offense ranked 30th (out of 32) in the NFL. He and the Panthers need a quarterback. Rhule struck out last season with Teddy Bridgewater. Things did not get any better in 2021 with Sam Darnold and Cam Newton.
I am not sure how the quarterback situation will improve. Carolina enters the offseason with Darnold under contract for $18.8 million and Newton set to become an unrestricted free agent. Cam may not want to return after being benched in the final two games following going 0-5 as the team’s starter.
There is also a lack of talent on the offensive line. The franchise has stated the team’s top priority this offseason is upgrading the offensive front. I guess that will aid whoever the quarterback is, but this team needs a quarterback who can lead.
