Valdese, NC – The annual Valdese “Treats in the Streets” will be held on October 31 beginning at 4pm in the downtown area. Every year for Halloween the Valdese Merchant’s Association partners with the Town of Valdese to hold this community event. Local merchants hand out candy from 4pm until 6pm. Candy goes fast so come early and your trick or treater will not be disappointed. A special performance will be presented on Main Street in front of the Wells Fargo Parking Lot by the Silver Sneakers Dancers and immediately following will be a costume contest in the town parking area. Prizes are sponsored by the Valdese Merchants Association and will be awarded for the following categories:

Ages 0 to 4-1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes; Ages 5 to 8-1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes; Ages 9 to 12-1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes; Adult 13+-1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes; Family (2 or more in themed costume)-1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes.

The costume contest will be judged by Old Colony Players costumer, Jeri Boerger and former General Manager Vickie Hyde. All are welcome to join in the contest and there is no entry fee.

“This is a safe and fun event for the entire family,” states Morrissa Angi, Community Affairs Director for the Town of Valdese. “It is always exciting to see what the favorite character is for the year and I am always amazed at the creativity of the costumes. I am honored to be part of this special event with our downtown merchants. I encourage you all to Shop Local so that events like these can continue to make our small town a special place to call home.”

During the month of October, the Valdese Merchants Association has been hosting a Halloween Window Display Contest to encourage merchants to decorate for the special event in downtown. The public is invited to vote for their favorite Halloween window on the Town of Valdese Facebook page. Prizes for the merchants with the best Halloween window display will also be announced following the costume contest.
