Another memorable performance from the North Carolina State Wolfpack ended Duke’s season as NC State tore off a 76-64 win in the NCAA Tournament’s Elite Eight over the weekend.
The Wolfpack (26-14) took the lead off a DJ Horne hoop with 11:39 left in the second half and pushed the advantage to 14 late in the game. The Blue Devils shot an abysmal 32% from the field for the game. Yes, everyone is talking about DJ Burns Jr., but it is the Wolfpack defense that has led the amazing streak NC State is still on.
NC State will be making its first trip to the Final Four since 1983, where it will join Connecticut, Alabama and Purdue. Duke ends the season with a 27-9 record.
Burns., Jr. did continue his dominant March Madness run with a team-high 29 points for the Wolfpack, completely outplaying Duke star, Kyle Filipowski who eventually fouled out.
After taking the lead midway through the half and Filipowski no longer on the floor, the Wolfpack kept their foot on the gas and ran away with the game and a ticket to the Final Four.
The Wolfpack will head to Phoenix where they will take on Zach Edey and Purdue in the Final Four.
During its March run, NC State has won four games against teams in the top 15 of the Pomeroy Ratings and will have to add another to the list if it’s going to advance to the title game. Purdue is third in the ratings.
The Wolfpack are underdogs again, a position they have enjoyed over the past two or three weeks. They are nine point underdogs vs. Purdue. NC State was around a seven-point underdog to both Marquette and Duke, so this is a position they are used to and have thrived in.
The matchup everyone will be watching is Burns vs. Zach Edey. The Purdue big man is coming off a 40-point game in the Elite Eight and is the most difficult matchup in hoops.
NC State has won nine straight elimination games to get to the Final Four. Using pregame win probabilities, the chances of this happening were 0.0097%, or 10314 to 1. The Wolfpack’s 14 losses are the most ever for a Final Four Team.
These numbers are why the tournament is called March Madness.
