Hickory – Resolve to get your hands dirty this summer, with Catawba Valley Community College Continuing Education Pottery Classes. Cultivate your creativity and progress your personal style with CVCC’s non-credit pottery classes. No experience necessary, and the only requirements for students are a tool kit, purchased at the CVCC bookstore or local craft store, and a desire to create. All classes are $166.25, and include $125 registration fee, $40 supply fee and $1.25 insurance fee.
Hand Built Pottery Techniques with Evelyn Arnold
Tuesdays, May 29 – July 31, 2018; 6pm-9pm No class July 3, 2018.
For students of all skill levels, including beginners, this course is designed to teach the many varied techniques and applications for hand building with clay. Students will focus on various ways and tools that can be used to make many forms for utilitarian use. This course will explore the use of molds, slabs and coils with an emphasis on surface design and glazing techniques.
Pottery on the Wheel with Evelyn Arnold
Wednesdays, May 30 – August 1, 2018; 6pm-9pm No class July 4, 2018.
This class is designed for the beginner through intermediate level potter. In this course, students will become familiar with turning methods and materials used in creating basic forms with the potters’ wheel. Topics include clay preparation, turning techniques, and basic glaze application. Upon completion, students should be able to center, turn basic forms such as bowls and mugs, apply basic glazes, and be familiar with loading and firing an electric kiln.
Pottery on the Wheel II with Preston Tolbert
Thursdays, May 31 – August 2, 2018; 6pm-9pm No class July 5, 2018.
Designed for experienced as well as beginner level potters, students will learn to create a variety of forms including pitchers, vases and lidded jars. Also included is instruction on how to apply glazes and the proper procedure for loading and firing an electric kiln. Upon completion, students will be familiar with working on the potter’s wheel, glaze application and firing techniques.
