The Carolina Panthers spent the offseason adding new offensive personnel around quarterback Bryce Young and Monday’s OTAs gave them their first chance to work in full drills since everyone joined the roster.
It is not a secret that Young had a rocky rookie season after being selected first overall last year. He and the team’s struggles led to head coach Frank Reich being fired during the season as the offense failed to find success in any facet of the game.
The Panthers hired former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dave Canales in January and they’ve acquired multiple new receivers, running backs and offensive linemen in hopes of giving Young a better chance to succeed in his second season.
A better season from Young and the offense would go a long way toward seeing playoff action again. It would also ease concerns that the Panthers have found their guy at quarterback.
Young will be learning a new offense under the tutelage of Canales. Carolina’s new head coach has spoken glowingly about his quarterback and has stated that Young is doing a “fantastic” job of picking up the playbook.
Canales is inheriting a quarterback and an offense that averaged just 179.8 passing yards with 11 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Improvement on offense will obviously put more points on the board. It will also keep the defense off the field which will put the team in position to win more games.
Full training camp opens in three months. We will see how Canales, Young, and the new arrivals mesh as a unit very soon.
