Hickory – The Broadway smash hit Waitress, featuring songs by pop star Sara Bareilles, opens June 6 at Hickory Community Theatre with a vibrant new cast and a story full of heart, humor, and hope.

“Seeing new talent grow here is one of the most exciting parts of this job,” said Artistic Director Eric Seale, who also directs the show. “It keeps our company vibrant and evolving.”

Kelsey Kott is already a familiar face behind the scenes — she leads HCT’s education program. Now she’s stepping into the spotlight. “What I love about HCT is that the season never looks like anyone else’s,” she said. “There’s a real commitment to variety and representation.”

Laura Parker, a student at Catawba Valley Community College, has lived in Hickory for just a year. “Being in the ensemble is a privilege,” she said. “I get to help bring the story to life and be part of its beautiful music.”

Ashley Robinson, from Lincolnton, holds a degree from Gardner-Webb University and works in human resources at Solero Technologies. “The theatre itself is my favorite part,” she said. “You walk in and feel the storytelling energy. It lights you up.”

Jupiter Slade is a Hickory native and also a CVCC student. She enjoys music, piano, singing, and cooking. “I love this musical, and HCT makes you feel welcome,” she said. “It’s a great place to grow.”

Preston Smith, also from Lincolnton, teaches preschool at Tutor Time and choreographs for Lincolnton High School. “I auditioned because I wanted to work with Jeff Hartman,” he said. “And at HCT, the sets be eating.”

Waitress is the story of a gifted pie maker who dares to start over when a baking contest offers a taste of something new.

Performances run June 6–21, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm, Sundays at 2:30pm, with a special Thursday show on June 19. Tickets are $18 for adults, $10 for youth and students. Visit hickorytheatre.org or call 828-328-2283.
