Charlotte, NC – As many major US cities prepare to welcome thousands of visitors for major international soccer matches this summer, Better Business Bureau (BBB) is urging fans to stay vigilant against scams targeting travelers, ticket buyers, and event attendees.
The first matches kicked off in the United States on June 12, 2026, with visitors from across the US, Canada, Mexico, and around the world. As fans make travel plans, purchase tickets, and book accommodations, scammers are looking to capitalize on the excitement.
“Visitors will be traveling from all over the world to attend matches, and many will be booking hotels, transportation, and tickets months in advance. That’s exactly the kind of excitement scammers look for,” said
Juliana O’Rork, VP of Marketing, Communications and Business Development at the BBB Serving Greater Charlotte and Western NC. “We want fans focused on enjoying the matches, and not have to deal with ticket, rental, or travel scams.”
BBB Scam Tracker reports already show consumers nationwide losing money to fake ticket sales, undelivered merchandise, and scammers posing as event organizers, sponsors, and volunteer coordinators.
Consumers should be especially cautious of:
- Fake ticket sales through social media, online marketplaces, and messaging apps
- Vacation rental scams using stolen photos and fake listings near event venues
- Travel and hospitality scams offering discounted hotel packages, VIP experiences, or transportation services that do not exist
- Phishing emails, text messages, and fake websites designed to steal personal and financial information
BBB recommends fans:
- Purchase tickets only through authorized sellers
- Research lodging and travel providers before booking
- Be wary of deals that seem too good to be true
- Avoid paying with wire transfers, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or peer-to-peer payment methods that offer limited protection
- Use a credit card whenever possible for added fraud protection
- Check businesses at BBB.org before making purchases or reservations
“If you’re being pressured to act immediately or offered a deal that seems unusually good, take a moment to verify before you buy,” said O’Rork. “A few extra minutes of research can save consumers money and help ensure their trip goes as planned.”
Consumers who encounter suspicious offers or believe they’ve been targeted by a scam are encouraged to report it at BBB.org/ScamTracker.
