Hickory, NC – The SALT Block and its residents would like to invite the community to join in a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing on Saturday, July 20th! There will be hands-on family friendly activities happening all day long on the block for visitors to take part in, and at 6:00 pm the Western Piedmont Symphony will be holding their free Summer Pops concert on the North Lawn of the SALT Block.
HMA – Hickory Museum of art will offer kids the opportunity to create some cool space art from 1:00 – 4:00 pm and view space related artwork in the museum. Local artist Jeramie Jones will be onsite to create his space inspired spray paint art.
WPS – Join Western Piedmont Symphony for our FUN, FREE Summer Pops concert at 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 20th, on the North Lawn of the SALT Block, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the landing on the moon. The award-winning Western Piedmont Symphony, conducted by our NEW Maestro, Matthew Troy, will perform patriotic marches, Broadway show tunes, TV & movie themes, light classical favorites, and a salute to our military. Invite your family & friends, bring your lawn chairs and enjoy refreshments from local food trucks. 10 x 10 pop up tents will be allowed in some areas of the lawn.
PBML – Patrick Beaver Memorial Library will host activities for all ages. Drop-in between 1pm and 5pm for crafts and activities for all ages. Visitors are invited to record their memories of the Apollo Launch to be submitted to NASA’s Apollo Stories project. From 10am-3pm: NASA and Rockets for adults – NASA Solar System Ambassador Art Riddle will teach participants about the history and future of NASA. Following the presentation, participants will build and launch rockets (Advance registration required. Call 828-304-0500).
CSC – Catawba Science Center will have hands-on family, friendly activities all about the Moon and space from 1:00 – 4:00 pm. Guests are also invited on that day to check out the newly renovated Hall of Astronomy in the Millholland Planetarium building, and view a brand new planetarium show about the Apollo 11 mission. The planetarium lobby will feature a gallery of images from the 1969 Apollo Moon Landing mission to transport guests back in time to journey to the Moon and back with NASA Astronauts. Cost included in general admission.
Members from the Catawba Valley Astronomy Club will also be onsite with astrophotography, and meteorite displays along with the chance for Solar Observing (weather permitted). This event will be located on the SALT Block, 243 3rd Ave NE, Hickory, NC 28601.
