Hickory – ACAP Hickory (Adult Children of Aging Parents) presents “Caring for Loved Ones with Dementia” on Tuesday, June 12, 5:30-7:00 p.m. Location of the program is the Fellowship Hall of Mt Olive Lutheran Church, 2780 North Center Street, Hickory. Speaker for the program is Kathy Long, BSN BC NCDP CADDCT, Retired Vice-President of Adult Services for Senior Services, Winston-Salem, NC.
Although Alzheimer’s is the type of dementia we seem to hear about most often, it is only one of more than 120 forms of dementia, a debilitating condition that affects every detail of a person’s life, significantly impacts the family and is now considered a public health priority. The June 12 ACAP Hickory will offer attendees a deeper understanding of dementia and provide tools and resources to help care for a loved one with dementia, now and in the future. Attendees will become aware of differences between dementia and Alzheimer’s, discover interventions to assist with behavioral issues, learn examples of self-care needed during caregiving, and gain essentials necessary to maintain balance in personal, family and work life.
Ms. Kathy Long, the June ACAP Hickory speaker, graduated from NC Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in 1973 and received her BSN in 1993, later finding her niche in geriatric nursing. She has been in leadership roles most of her career and has received national recognition for her nursing and leadership skills. Although Ms. Long recently retired, she maintains her Gerontological Nurses Certification and her status as a National Certified Practitioner Trainer.
ACAP-Hickory gratefully acknowledges Encompass Home Health and Carolina Rehab Center of Burke, sponsors for the June program.
