Hickory – Catawba Valley Community College’s Interdisciplinary Read Committee announces its selection for the 2018-19 academic year will be “Dreamland: The True Tale of America’s Opiate Addiction,” by Sam Quinones. A kickoff event will be held Wednesday, September 26 at noon in the East Wing Auditorium located on the Main Campus on US Hwy. 70 SE in Hickory.
The PBS documentary “Understanding the Opioid Epidemic” will be shown at the kickoff. The film traces the causes behind the surge in prescription opioid abuse and its harmful impact on American society. The documentary conveys the severity of the addiction problem by using personal stories and expert interviews.
During the college’s year-long examination of each year’s interdisciplinary read selection, students from various core disciplines are challenged to consider themselves as part of a larger community and society. “Dreamland” is a timely selection as Catawba County has one of the highest addiction rates in the nation.
