Hickory – Greater Hickory Cooperative Christian Ministry (CCM) is proud to announce the receipt of 240 Comfort Kits from the Disabled Veterans National Foundation (DVNF), a generous contribution that will directly benefit veterans throughout Catawba County and the greater Hickory region.
The Comfort Kits contain essential personal care and hygiene items designed to provide immediate support, dignity, and comfort to veterans facing financial hardship, housing instability, or other life challenges. Through this partnership, CCM will distribute the kits while also connecting veterans and their families with critical local, state, and national resources available to them.
Founded in 1969, Greater Hickory Cooperative Christian Ministry has served as a beacon of hope for individuals and families experiencing poverty, crisis, homelessness, and food insecurity throughout the Hickory area. As a faith-based, volunteer-driven organization, CCM provides comprehensive services that address both immediate needs and long-term stability; including housing assistance, food support, crisis intervention, peer-support, medical, dental, and specialized services.
Veteran outreach remains a significant part of CCM’s mission. The ministry recognizes that military service often brings unique challenges that can affect veterans long after their service has ended. Through dedicated Veterans Services programs, CCM works to ensure that those who served our nation have access to housing resources, financial assistance, healthcare referrals, employment support, and community connections that foster long-term success and well-being.
The need for these services remains substantial. According to U.S. Census data, Catawba County is home to more than 8,100 veterans, representing a significant portion of the local population. Across North Carolina, hundreds of thousands of veterans call the state home, and many continue to face economic hardship, housing instability, food insecurity, and barriers to accessing healthcare and benefits. Veterans experiencing low incomes or housing challenges are often at increased risk of homelessness, making coordinated community support essential to ensuring their stability and success.
The Disabled Veterans National Foundation has become a valued partner in addressing those challenges nationwide. DVNF’s Health & Comfort Program provides essential supplies and resources to disabled and at-risk veterans through community-based organizations and direct outreach efforts. Through its Comfort Kit initiative, the foundation supports organizations across the country that share its commitment to improving the lives of veterans and ensuring that no veteran is forgotten.
CCM also recognizes that meaningful veteran support requires collaboration. The ministry is grateful to work alongside outstanding local organizations that strengthen the safety net for veterans throughout the region.
Among those partners is Foothills Veterans Helping Veterans, whose tireless advocacy, peer support, and resource navigation have helped countless veterans access benefits, housing assistance, transportation, and other essential services. Their veteran-to-veteran approach creates trusted relationships that often serve as a lifeline for individuals navigating difficult circumstances.
CCM also applauds Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry (ABCCM) and its Veterans Restoration Quarters program, which has earned statewide recognition for providing housing, rehabilitation, employment assistance, and comprehensive support services to veterans experiencing homelessness. Their work has transformed thousands of lives and serves as a model of veteran-focused care throughout North Carolina.
Together, these organizations demonstrate the power of collaboration in serving those who have served our country.
As CCM distributes the 240 Comfort Kits received from DVNF, the ministry remains committed to ensuring that veterans and their families receive not only essential supplies, but also access to the support systems, resources, and compassionate care they deserve.
