Hickory – The upcoming Dancing with Disney class for young performers—starting Tuesday, April and continuing every Tuesday through May 19—will be taught by none other than Kendall Melton, who describes herself as the “Biggest Disney Adult.” When it comes to dancing, she knows her stuff. This accomplished actor performed the lead role of Tracy Turnblad to outstanding acclaim, for her dancing skill, in HCT’s hit production of Hairspray last September. “Dancing is one of my greatest joys,” she said, “and it’s such a pleasure to get to share what I’ve learned with others.”
More than a dancer though, Melton is an educational professional. With a Bachelor of Science degree from Shenandoah University, and holds double Masters’ degrees — Master of Education and Education Specialist-School Counseling from Clemson University. She currently applies that knowledge to her job as a School Counselor at Hickory Career Arts Magnet School (HCAM).
Originally from Pittsboro, Melton relocated to Hickory for the position at HCAM. She made her HCT debut in Anastasia, and went on to roles at The Green Room Theatre as Mrs. Phelps in Matilda and as Ensemble/Dance Captain in Sister Act.
Dancing with Disney is a creative and fun class for children in grades K–2. This delightful class, led by the self‑described “Biggest Disney Adult,” runs Tuesdays, April 28–May 19, from 5–6 PM. Tuition is $100. Students will study scenes and songs from classic animated films and share their creativity in a final showcase for friends and family. To register for this class please visit hickorytheatre.org/classes.
Future Offerings: Registration is also now open for all HCT summer camps. For ages 9–11, there are two offerings: Broadway’s Boldest Villains (June 15–19) and Zero to Hero (June 22–26). Camp sessions run from 9 AM to 12 PM each week. Tuition is $150, and a camp T‑shirt is included.
For teens, there’s the Teen Improvageddon Camp, June 15–19, from 2–5 PM. Improv comedy is all about thinking on your feet while working as a team — a great way to build real‑world skills like collaboration and creative thinking. Tuition is $150 and includes a camp T‑shirt.
