Newton, NC – Out of concern for public safety and in accordance with Gov. Roy Cooper’s stay-at-home order, the City of Newton suspended public access to playgrounds, tennis courts, and basketball courts effective 5 p.m. March 30.
Newton parks, including Southside Park, Northside/Broyhill Park, Westside/Jaycee Park, East Newton Park, and Jacob Fork Park, will remain open. The Heritage Trail Greenway will remain open. Restrooms at all Newton parks are closed; please use the restroom before you visit or use the portable toilets temporarily installed at each park.
All Newton Parks and Recreation Department facilities, including recreation centers, gyms, and workout rooms remain closed.
The City of Newton understands the value playgrounds and recreation facilities provide to our community, especially our children. However, given the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and the guidance from trusted public health agencies on physical distancing, limiting in-person social interactions, avoiding spaces where people congregate in close quarters, and concerns about transmission of the virus through surfaces, we believe that playgrounds and recreation facilities should close temporarily in an effort to reduce community spread.
