Cheech and Chong
Cheech and Chong’s Last Movie – The stoner duo are back once again in what is being billed as their final film. Not a comedy movie, per se, although there are funny moments to be sure. It’s a documentary charting the duo’s heyday, their split and eventual reteaming.
Now On Disc:
Sony:
Gandhi (1982) The film that famously beat out ET for the Oscar for Best Picture gets a standalone 4K release with archival bonus material from previous releases.
Stripes (1981) The beloved comedy also gets a standalone 4K UHD release from the label for the first time, along with previously issued archival extras. What makes this release unique is that it includes three cuts of the film.
Criterion:
Anora (2024) This year’s Oscar winner for Best Picture gets its first ever physical media release this week in both Blu-Ray and 4K UHD formats. Bonus materials include deleted scenes, making of doc and multiple commentary tracks.
Warner Brothers:
Dirty Harry (1971), The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976) and Pale Rider (1985)-A trio of Clint Eastwood classics are getting the 4K UHD treatment this week from the label. The transfers are terrific and there are several hours’ worth of new extras on each disc.
Kino:
Things to Do in Denver When You’re Dead (1995) Andy Garcia is an ex-gangster attempting to keep his head above water after a job for hire goes wrong, in this crime thriller getting a 4K UHD release. Bonus materials include two new commentaries.
The Bermuda Triangle (1979) Brad Crandall narrates another of the many Sunn Classic Pictures documentaries from the mid to late 70s, this one focusing on the subject of the film’s title. A new commentary is included on this Blu-Ray release which also sports a great new transfer.
Posse (1975) Kirk Douglas is a US marshal with political aspirations who must bring in robber Bruce Dern in this actioner coming to Blu-Ray. A new commentary is included.
Swept Away (1974) Lina Wertmuller’s tale of the role reversal between a capitalist and the sailor she eventually depends on to stay alive, gets a 4K facelift as well. Two commentaries and an interview are included.
Criterion:
Basquiat (1996) Julian Schnabel’s portrait of the life and times of the famed NYC artist makes its debut in the 4K format featuring the original theatrical version and a new black and white version as well. Bonus materials include commentary and interviews.
Vinegar Syndrome:
The label is issuing several noteworthy releases this week in both 4K and Blu-Ray format. They are the 4K UHD release of Last Tango in Paris (1973) and Drop Zone (1994) and a Blu-Ray release of Devil Doll (1964)/Curse of the Voodoo (1964-65) on one disc.
Warner Archive:
Among the new releases from the label are the shattering portrait of substance addiction starring Michael Keaton, Clean and Sober (1988), the actioner starring Jim Brown and Fred Williamson, Three the Hard Way (1974), the western, Springfield Rifle (1952), the animated series, The Wacky Races: The Complete Series (1968) and the musical romance, Lili (1953), which stars Leslie Caron. All of the releases sport new transfers from the original negatives.
Eureka:
The label is issuing two new Blu-Ray additions to their growing Asian cinema library. They are Ringo Lam’s The Adventurers (1995) and The Magnificent Chang Cheh (1966-1977). Both come in handsome packaging and sport fresh transfers.
