The Philadelphia Eagles turned in one of the most dominant performances in Super Bowl history by pasting a 40-22 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.
It was thought that the Chiefs would be the ones making history as they were seeking to become the first franchise to win three consecutive Super Bowls.
The difference in the game became clear early on. Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes ran for his life the entire game, and the Eagles’ defense deserves the credit for making him jumpy from the start. Philly finished with six quarterback sacks, one off the Super Bowl record for most sacks in the game. Milton Williams’ strip sack of Mahomes in the fourth quarter, which he recovered, was the exclamation point on the commanding defensive effort.
Mahomes did have two touchdown passes in the final three minutes to make the game appear closer than it ever really was.
Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was virtually flawless, finishing 17-for-22 passing for 221 yards with two touchdowns to go with one rushing score. He also was the game’s leading rusher with 72 yards on the ground on 11 attempts.
Over the first 30 minutes, the Eagles completely suffocated the defending champs. The Chiefs had one first down, on their first drive, at halftime. With Mahomes sacked three times, Kansas City had 23 net yards of offense. Meanwhile, Philadelphia had 179 net yards and ran nearly twice as many plays (39-20) and held possession twice as long. The 24-point lead was the steepest margin at halftime in Super Bowl history.
The second half saw Philadelphia extend its lead in a game that never was in question. Viewers who stayed with the game were left to decide who had the best commercials.
I will close with this question. Why are the Super Bowl commercials getting worse and worse?
