Hickory – ACAP Hickory (Adult Children of Aging Parents) presents The Adult-Child Caregiver at Work on Tuesday, August 14, 5:30-7:00 pm. Location for the program is the Fellowship Hall of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, 2780 North Center Street, Hickory.

Speakers for the program are Susan H. Sayor, MS, Franchise Owner, Home Instead Senior Care; Beth Harris Brandes, MSW; and Cynthia Eades, Catawba County Human Resources Director.

“Help me, I can’t get up!” This is a frightening phrase for family caregivers to hear when they are on their way to work or already at work. Attendees at the ACAP Hickory meeting will gain an insight on how to handle workplace challenges when caring for a loved one.

Caregiving has changed over the past 50 years. This has impacted employees and employers (financially, physically and mentally). Attendees will learn the impact of women in the workforce, of family distances (geographical and emotional) and of technology (never unplugged); effective communication and advocacy strategies in the workplace between employers, employees and colleagues, approaches for speaking with employers and cultural changes in the workplace to support those caring for adult loved ones, not just those with children; solutions, tips and strategies for caring for loved ones such as when it is time to get help and exploring FMLA, EAP, flex schedules, job shares and other resources.

Speakers for the August 14 ACAP Hickory meeting include: Susan H. Saylor, Hickory franchise owner of Home Instead Senior Care and founder of Senior Information Resources (sponsor of the recent Prime of Life Senior Expo). Ms. Saylor’s most satisfying work has been with aging adults and caring for her mother long distance.

Beth Harris Brandes, MSW, currently works as an organizational consultant for non-profit and human service agencies, after a 30-year career in health and social work. She was assistant director of Catawba County Social Services for 16 years.

Cynthia Eades has been the Catawba County Human Resources (HR) Director since 2010. Prior to that she served as HR Director of Iredell and Cabarrus Counties and has served in a variety of other Human Resource roles in NC organizations including the City of Winston-Salem, Person County and the Research Triangle Institute.
