The Super Mario Galaxy Movie – The much-anticipated sequel to the uber successful Super Mario Brothers Movie from three years ago has now arrived and appears to be on track to top the success of the original. It’s interesting to note the changes in public tastes when contrasting the failure of the original live action adaptation from thirty-some-odd years ago and the success of the recent crop of reboots.

NEW TO DISC:

Criterion:

Gilda (1946) Rita Hayworth in the role that made her a household name as the wife of a criminal kingpin who tests the limits of both her husband and his henchman’s emotional wits. The first ever 4K release includes featurette, commentary and interview.

Kino:

The Stewardesses (1969) This 3-D entry, one of the most profitable ever and concerning the sexual exploits of the women of the film’s title, makes its Blu Ray debut and contains some new bonus material. Among the bonuses are featurettes and a commentary.

Arrow:

Wandering Ginza Butterfly (1972) The long sought after Japanese Yakuza film, about an ex con getting tangled in a gangster’s scheme, comes to the Blu Ray format with a nice selection of bonus materials.

Film Masters:

The label has a new Monster Mayhem Collection on Blu Ray (1957-1958) which includes The Brain from Planet Arous, Frankenstein’s Daughter, Monster from Green Hell and Giant from the Unknown.

Shout Factory:

The label is reissuing in 4K steelbook format the Best Picture Oscar winner, The Deer Hunter, with all of the previously issued bonus features intact.

Universal:

Carlito’s Way (1993) Brian DePalma’s reteaming with Al Pacino, ten years after their landmark 1983 film, Scarface, gets yet another 4K release. This time from the studio that released it.

Lightyear Entertainment:

Randy and the Mob (2007) Walton Goggins and Ray Mckinnon star in this tale of twins tangling with both the IRS and the mob of the film’s title and now making its Blu Ray debut. An Oscar winning short film from the same creative team, The Accountant, is also being issued separately and as a stand-alone release.
