Hickory – Hickory Ballet & Performing Arts students are preparing for busy days ahead!

The studio will hold its 3rd annual International Dance Day Festival on Saturday, May 3rd, from 12 noon until 5 pm at its downtown studio, 116 3rd St., NW, Hickory.  This free community event will showcase several dance styles including tap, jazz, and creative movement.  Guest artists include professor and author Tamara Williams, BFA, MFA, who has studied the histories, cultures, and dances of the African Diaspora extensively.  Founder and creative director of Nrityangan, Ritu Mukherjee, will provide training in modern Bollywood dancing.  Chief Walking Tall will provide a healing sound bath with movement.  The public is invited to join this fun afternoon festival of classes for all ages.   Everyone is welcome, and no dance experience is necessary.  A complete schedule of the afternoon’s classes can be found at www.hickoryballetpa.com.

HBPA will present its spring ballet, Cinderella, at the Old Post Office Playhouse in Newton on Thursday and Friday, May 22 and 23, at 7 p.m. and on Saturday, May 24, at 3 p.m.   Nearly 90 HBPA ballet students are rehearsing the beloved story of Cinderella, her evil stepmother and stepsisters, magical fairy godmother, and handsome prince!    Tickets are available at 828-464-6128 or thegreenroomtheatre.org.

HBPA’s summer schedule is set, and registration is open.   Ballet camps and ballet intensive classes are available for dancers from ages 4 through 17.  Campers will also have an opportunity to participate in a Wicked Dance Camp, Beetlejuice Jr Theatre Camp, and an original musical entitled 12 Dancing Princesses.  For further information, see www.hickoryballetpa.com.
