Hickory – Beginning September 2, 2025, Hickory Museum of Art (HMA) is moving forward with a major renovation of its spaces. Before renovation work begins, HMA invites the community to a “Closing the Gates” celebration on Sunday, August 31 at 4 PM. The event will feature remarks from Mayor Hank Guess, an additional special guest and ceremony, and light refreshments. This family-friendly gathering marks an exciting moment as the museum temporarily closes its gates to begin a fresh new chapter.
During the renovation, the museum will maintain its connection to the community through “HMA on the Go”, an initiative that brings art classes, events, and artwork by local artists directly into public spaces. A key component of this effort is location support from our local HMA member partners as well as a temporary location at Valley Hills Mall, which will offer:
Art classes and events for all ages, including popular programs like Pint Size Picasso and Homeschool Art
A rotating gallery space featuring 10 local artists, selected through a live drawing following an open call for participation
Make-and-take art activities for visitors to drop in and create
Clarissa Starnes, Executive Director of HMA, noted that this project represents a significant step forward for the museum. “Thanks to the continued support of our community, we look forward to not only the exciting renovation and future of Hickory Museum of Art but also a year of deep connection”. She further stated, “HMA on the Go” is our opportunity to work with our community and we are thrilled to go beyond our walls and come directly to you.”
