NOW IN THEATERS:

Five Nights at Freddie’s 2 – The follow up to the supernatural adaptation of the video game has now been unleashed five years after the original.

Also playing in theaters is a new cut of Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill 1 and 2 entitled Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair (*** ½), which incorporates both films into one single event and includes new footage.

NEW TO STREAMING:

Paul Anka: His Way (***) is a new documentary portrait of the singer-songwriter-performer now in his sixth decade of doing his thing. Somewhat one sided but an enjoyable peak at Anka’s life and career, nonetheless. (HBO Max)

NEW TO DISC:

Paramount:

Two well regarded films in the Steven Spielberg canon, Minority Report (2002) and Catch Me If You Can (2002), are being issued in 4K UHD on disc for the first time from the label. Not much in the way of new bonus material but fans will be pleased with the new upgrades.

Also being issued for the first time are standalone 4K releases of Airplane (1980) and Top Secret (1984).

Criterion:

The critically beloved drama from the Powell-Pressburger filmmaking team, I Know Where I’m Going (1945), makes its 4K debut with new bonus materials.

Lionsgate:

Kevin Smith’s satirical look at religion, Dogma (1999), comes to 4K after being out of print for many years. There are archival and new extras included in the release.

The incredible documentary about the making of Apocalypse Now, Hearts of Darkness (1991), comes to the 4K format for the first time with new and previously issued extras as well.

Also being issued in 4K by the label is American Psycho (2000).

Disney:

The fondly remembered animated entry from the studio, The Emperor’s New Groove (2000), makes its 4K debut with previous bonus material intact.

Kino:

New 4K releases from the label include the Jack Black starring comedy, Nacho Libre (2006), from the creators of Napoleon Dynamite, and the classic horror anthology, Dead of Night (1946). Both releases include new commentaries.

Dan Curtis’ Gothic Tales (1973-1974) is another collection spotlighting the famed producer’s horror work originally broadcast on ABC television. There are new commentaries included as well.

Sony:

Penny Marshall’s adaptation of the true-life best seller by Dr. Oliver Sachs, Awakenings (1990) comes to the 4K format for the first time timed to coincide with its 35th anniversary. No new extras but includes previously issued materials.

The label is also issuing a steelbook 4K UHD release of Anaconda (1998).

88 Films:

Rosa (1986) The Hong Kong action comedy starring Biao Yen comes to the Blu Ray format with some new bonus materials as well.

Warner Archive:

The Errol Flynn starring Civil War drama, Silver River (1948), is the week’s only Blu Ray release from the label.

Universal:

The label is reissuing The Blues Brothers (1980) on 4K in time for its 45 the anniversary. They are also issuing a 20th anniversary 4K upgrade of Jarhead (2005).

Arrow:

Shaw Scope Volume Four (1975-1983) is the latest in the label’s ongoing Blu Ray releases of the Hong Kong Studio’s catalog. The latest batch includes Super Inframan / Oily Maniac / Battle Wizard / Black Magic / Black Magic Part 2 / Bewitched / Hex / Hex Vs. Witchcraft / Hex After Hex / Bat Without Wings / Bloody Parrot / The Fake Ghost Catchers / Demon of the Lute / Seeding of a Ghost / Portrait in Crystal / Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. A Bonus disc with many extras is also included.
