The speculation began as soon as the news broke Monday that the New York Giants fired head coach Brian Daboll.
Is there a chance that the Giants would seek Bill Belichick and we would see a return to the NFL?
The 73-year-old, currently in his first season as UNC’s head coach, has said all the right things thus far regarding that question. Predictably, he said he was focused on the Tar Heels’ upcoming opponent, Wake Forest.
Belichick and the Giants have history. He was the defensive coordinator under Bill Parcells when New York won Super Bowls 21 and 25. But the dynamic around a potential Belichick hire in 2025 has completely changed from even just two years ago, after he and the Patriots parted ways following 24 seasons and six Super Bowl titles.

Belichick
First of all, there was not much interest when Belichick sought out a NFL job before ending up in Chapel Hill. Belichick struck out on NFL jobs after his New England exit, interviewing for the Falcons job that eventually went to Raheem Morris. He then took on several media jobs for the 2024 season before shocking the football world with his move to UNC.
Secondly, Belichick also hasn’t exactly impressed in his debut as a college head coach. UNC is 4-5 this year, including 2-3 in ACC play. They lost four straight before showing a glimmer of hope by posting back-to-back wins against Syracuse and Stanford.
Daboll, who spent seven seasons as an assistant on Belichick’s Patriots staff, was fired a day after the Giants lost to the Bears to fall to 2-8 and blew a double-digit lead for the fourth time this year.
I wonder if Tar Heels fans are hopeful of yet another change? I wonder if the New York Giants have even a shred of interest in what all would come with a Belichick hire?
Panthers Teased Us
Just one week after I spoke in these pages about the Carolina Panthers finally having a winning record as the calendar reached November, they up and lose to the lowly New Orleans Saints by a 17-7 score.
It was a disastrous performance and confirmed that this is not a playoff team. It also confirmed in my mind that Bryce Young is not the answer at quarterback.
