Hickory – Redhawk Publications is excited to announce the release of a new book titled “Tell Us Marcellus: The Thorntons of Harper House.” This book marks the first writing partnership between wife and husband, Claudia Ward and Richard Eller.

Award-winning authors Ward and Eller are no strangers to the world of writing. Claudia has written two books and won the inaugural “Jan Karon Mitford Museum GetLit” fiction contest, while Richard has authored or project-managed over 15 books and video projects, and has won the North Carolina Society of Historians, “Award of Excellence” for his books on the history of Hickory, North Carolina. Both authors teach at community colleges – Richard teaches history at Catawba Valley Community College and Claudia teaches communication at McDowell Community College.

“Tell Us Marcellus: The Thorntons of Harper House,” tells the fascinating story of Elizabeth Camp Jennings Rutherford Thornton and her third husband Marcellus, one of the most widely traveled and unique couples in Hickory. Their adventures and impact on the town of Hickory in the late 1800s will keep readers both engaged and amused.

This book is a historical narrative and a testament to the power of partnership and collaboration. It will appeal to those who enjoy a good historical story and a glimpse into the dynamics of a successful marriage and working relationship.

Claudia Eller expresses, “This is our first official collaboration between wife and husband, and it seems appropriate that the book should be about a wife and husband. Now the two engage in a true partnership, much like their marriage and the one they document.”

Both Eller and Ward will be discussing their book and its subjects at an upcoming book discussion on Monday, May 13th from 6 pm – 7 pm at the Patrick Beaver Memorial Library in Downtown Hickory.
